Rasmus Myrup
The Rim

April 12 - May 11, 2024

Jack Barrett is pleased to present The Rim, Danish artist Rasmus Myrup’s third exhibition with the gallery. For this latest body of work, Myrup focuses solely on painting, creating a series of twelve gouache paintings on synthetic paper, mounted to Dibond. The borderless edges of the works evoke the flattened nature of a digital image, like a floating, handmade JPEG.

Attempting to foster a sense of intimacy often lost in a digital space, Myrup paints highly personal moments from his own life, laying bare the vulnerabilities and insecurities we so often publicly conceal, but all experience. Here, specificity engenders universality. Vignettes of emotionally-charged scenes set in social and domestic spaces depict the collective feelings of rejection, regret, and remorse.

The Rim is a psycho-spatial foray into Myrup’s histrionic world, one in which the viewer is invited to participate and draw connection to their own lived experience, considering personal feelings that are in a quantum state of being both ‘exactly like’ and ‘completely dissimilar’ to those of others. Exploring the languages, stories, and thoughts that hold the power to bridge the gap between individuals, Myrup considers what ties people together in a world of disparity.
